Paal Nilssen-Love Circus

Popular and free

HURRAY! I want to dance, and preferably while Paal plays drums, wrote a reviewer after experiencing this band last fall.

Paal Nilssen-Love "Circus" is the Molde-born musician's latest project. He has gathered people from different camps with experience from styles such as ethnic, classical, contemporary, jazz, free jazz, noise, pop etc. to a great band that only the pandemic has prevented from immediately becoming world known. Due to travel restrictions, the circus has given few performances, and the first album will release this fall. However, those who have had the opportunity to experience the group are ecstatic.

Paal Nilssen-Love gives us a dance party, and its hard to sit still with such music from the stage. Riff from ethion jazz and Brazilian rhythms bathe in a free, wildly improvised nude bath. Up float inspired soloists, writes Torkjell Hovland in Ballade, while Audun Vinger on JazziNorge says that "The cheer was on the roof along the way, and it is a miracle that we did not succumb to civil disobedience, kicked the tables and danced".

Paal has written music where the themes appear as maps where the musicians can choose weather and wind. In recent years, the bandleader has spent a lot of time in Ethiopia and Brazil, which makes its mark on the music, in addition to his long-standing fascination with music from Mali and Senegal. Together with jazz and improv tradition, this makes Paal Nilssen-Love Circus an unpredictable and colorful ensemble with a wide range. Paal says he wants music to trigger a lot of emotions in people; rhythmic, emotional, energetic, mysterious, both naked and grandiose.

Hedda Mae

Irresistibly disco, funk and jazz

The music is akin to the electronic "Oslo disco" which has been made famous by artists such as Lindstrøm and Todd Terje, but Falkenberg mixes jazz and improvisational music and catchy pop melodies.

Behind the name Kappekoff is bassist and producer Magnus Falkenberg from Oslo with a background from the jazz line at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

In the autumn of 2020, Kappekoff released the album «Turning Points», where the musical uniqueness is the great variety and breadth of the soundscape and genre expression. The chance that you have heard the song "Why You" is big, at least if you are a NRK P3 listener.

The album features both jazz performers and popular artists such as Ola Kvernberg, Jimmy Smash, Myra, Linni, Thomas Busch (Proviant Audio), Lyder Øvreås Røed (Fieh), Martin Windstad (Todd Terje, Steamdome, Kurt Nilsen etc.) and Kristoffer Eikrem (Mutual Intentions).

These help to enhance the breadth of the music in genre and expression.

Kappekoff just re-released the album, this time with only instrumental versions.

Tora

Precisely for this reason, the band TORA, with Norway's new guitar heroine Tora Dahle Aagård crowns Saturday night in Alexandraparken during this year's Moldejazz.

It bursts with energetic girl power, rock virtuosity, playfulness, and a strong joy of playing when Tora and the band are on stage.

This will be a highlight, and precisely the highlights have been in line for Dahle Aagård so far in her career. Tora and the band's second album «Girls» came in 2020 and was deservedly nominated for a Spellemann in the blues category. The artist, who reportedly practices from the time she gets up in the morning until 2 o'clock at night, has not been lazy in the corona year either and has performed many solo concerts. In October 2020, she shared the main stage during the world's largest virtual guitar festival with legends such as Joe Bonamassa, Carlos Santana, St Vincent and John McLaughlin. She has over 160,000 followers from around the world on Instagram, and Hollywood legends in the fan base. Despite her relatively young age (27 years), she has already been on stage in London's own great hall Royal Albert Hall during "The Norwegian Blues Adventure" together with, among others, Knut Reiersrud, Vidar Busk and Amund Maarud.

We look forward to following TORA further, but first we look forward to seeing her in Alexandraparken in July!

Red Kite

Red Kite is Norway's new supergroup at the intersection of dizzying psychedelia, high-octane rock and ecstatic free jazz.

The band consists of members from several of the kingdom's most famous bands in the evergreen prog/jazz segment: Elephant 9, Shining, Bushman's Revenge and Grand General. A crew of "usual suspects" who alone guarantee a fresh cook in the pot!

The music of Red Kite has been described as "Gothic Mahavishnu for the new century" and has an audience far beyond the inner circles of jazz. In 2020, for example, they should have played at Europe's leading heavy rock festival Roadburn. The band released their debut album in 2019 on the British credit company Rare Noise Records. An album that ended up in the top 10 list of this year's best album in Jazzwise.

"We all listened a lot to rock and heavy when we grew up," says drummer Lofthus. "Only later did we discover jazz, prog and all sorts of other delights. For us, it's just Music, to the extent that everything is now just boiled together into a large organic stew ».

This concert will be another welcome opportunity for all audiences who want to freshen up the bakery after a year with few concerts. We guarantee solid delivery of explosive energy levels and high sound pressure from the stage in Storyville!

A tonic for the troops

A Tonic for the Troops is a band with great news value. It came as a big surprise when the debut album "Ambush" appeared a short time ago.

We know Ellen Brekken as a roaring bass engine in the Hedvig Mollestad Trio, as a steady anchor in the Tord Gustavsen trio and from several fine Folk music projects. Even Dance With A Stranger has benefited from her electric bass playing. Now she has taken a new step in putting together her own acoustic jazz band that nods eagerly and affectionately towards tradition, but which at the same time has the gift of boldness.

A Tonic for the Troops is a quartet: Magnus Bakken on saxophones, Espen Berg on piano, Magnus Sefaniassen Eide on drums and Brekken on acoustic bass. The break is behind all the composition, and it sounds nice and sits like a shot. And Espen Berg is now seriously sailing up as one of his generation's most exciting pianists.

A Tonic for the Troops is an expression that originates from the old British Empire, where it was said that they took a refreshing gin & tonic against malaria in tropical areas. The first reviews of the album suggest that this band is really a refreshing tonic for the listeners and quite certainly good for public health in general.

Trondheim Jazzorkester & Signe Emmeluth

‘Physicality in/emotion’

Signe Emmeluth's commissioned work for Trondheim Jazz Orchestra for Moldejazz 2021 is a multisensory concert, where sound and light interpret the experience of the physical in the music.

Signe says that “the physical aspect of music has always fascinated me. The energetic and contrast filled. How frequencies affect the body through phenomena such as interference, when two or more tones glide between each other in the listener's head. Or the experience of a vacuum, where the lack of sound or light can feel completely overwhelming. How does the physical affect us emotionally? And not least, how is the musician's own physique affected when pushed to extremes? Everything is connected. "

The title «Physicality in / emotion», refers to the physical in music and its movements - hence «in motion», and how the physical affects the mood and presence of both listener and musician, for example through volume and exhaustion - «emotion».

Signe Emmeluth has gathered a creamy layer of musicians for this occasion, and we are sure that this will be a concert that will be talked about for a long time.

Maja SK Ratkje - vocals, Eira Bjørnstad Foss - violin, Marianne Baudouin Lie - cello, Signe Emmeluth - alto saxophone, Amalie Dahl - alto saxophone, Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø - trombone, Joakim Rainer Petersen - piano / synth, Jonas Krøvel - guitar, Karl Bjorå - guitar, Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard - bass, Tor Haugerud - drums, Tor Brevik - sound, Phillip Isaksen - light
